A new initiative to encourage more employees to take up mental health awareness skills is now available nationwide. Award winning Signs4Life are showcasing this nationwide initiative to help staff to focuses on developing practical skills for crisis intervention. It isn't aimed at making people therapists, but at providing help in an emergency, before professional help can be obtained. This makes it ideal for people managing staff, or interacting with the public.

"You never know when you will come into contact with a client, a colleague or member of the public who is suffering from depression or an anxiety or psychotic disorder. Our training workshops cover in detail the causes signs and symptoms of common mental health conditions in addition to exploring risk factors. All of our tutors are registered, licensed and trained by Mental Health First Aid England. Alarmingly 1 in 4 will experience mental illness at some stage in the course of a year. About 10% of children have a mental health problem at any one time. Self-harming statistics in the UK are one of the highest in Europe and only 1 in 10 prisoners have no mental disorder," explains Ms Fozia Parveen, Signs4Life managing director.

Fozia is a qualified optometrist and was recently nominated as Oxfam's 100 most inspiring women of 2011 as part of their International Women's Day centenary celebration.
